Speed Is a Ranking Signal — Full Stop
In 2021, Google rolled out the Core Web Vitals update, making page speed an official search ranking factor. That means if your website is slow, you are being penalized in search results — regardless of how good your content is.
The three Core Web Vitals Google measures are:
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) — how fast your main content loads
- First Input Delay (FID) — how quickly the page responds to interaction
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) — how stable the layout is as it loads
Google wants your LCP under 2.5 seconds, FID under 100ms, and CLS under 0.1. Most template-built websites fail at least one of these.
Why Template Sites Struggle
WordPress alone powers over 40% of the internet — which means millions of slow websites. The average WordPress site loads in 3–5 seconds. Some load in 8+. Every second of delay costs you conversions: research consistently shows a 1-second delay reduces conversions by 7%.
